Horse country from Ocala to Cedar Key. Not to be missed.

The call of the road takes us to the West Coast today. Recommended by a friend we decide to take the back roads... Miles of green and not so yet green pastures mostly dedicated to Horse Ranches interrupted once in a while by State Forests. Training Ecuries, manicured mansions and properties with long driveways to get to the buildings, race tracks surrounded by white posted fences, stables after stables, horses next to their new born... . (Plowing after a snow storm is none of these inhabitants worry).
Some amateur pictures below that do not quite represent the beauty of what we saw. (sorry) With a bit of imagination, you might get the idea. A must see,worth our 1h30 road trip. Just amazing area!
Final destination: Cedar Key, small island, copy cat of Key West without its free range chicken. Fun to wander around this small town before warming up on the sunny side of a cafe where one can savor local oysters.
Aujourd'hui, direction Cote Ouest (gulf du Mexique). Suggéré  par un ami, avons decide de voyager sur les routes secondaires... des km de champs verts ou pas tout a fait verts, pour la plupart des Ranchs Equestres. Des écuries specialisées au dressage de chevaux; magnifiques maisons et propriétés  aux longs chemins pour y accéder; champs de courses entourées de clotures blanches, écuries après écuries, chevaux broutant a cote de leur petit. (Apparemment les habitants n'ont pas le souci de dégager leur long chemin d'entree après une tempête de neige) 
Quelques photos très médiocres ci-dessous, désolée. Peut-Être avec un peu d'imagination....  Cela vaut la peine de se déplacer pour 1h30 de route. Très beau!
Destination finale: Cedar Key, petite ile, imitation de Key West mais sans ses poules fermieres. Agreable a decouvrir avant de se refugier de l'air froid, sur le cote ensoleillé d'un bistro où on peut déguster les petites huitres de la region.

Wild life in the Springs country.

Traveling means investigating the region you are in, hence some interesting day trips. Crystal Springs, Silver Springs, Rainbow Springs, Manatee Springs, Homossassa Springs, so naturally we are  attracted to these clear water parks around Ocala (70-72F).  Therefore yesterday we boarded a small boat after driving toward the Gulf of Mexico to join other tourists in a park which harbors native animals many rescued, birds in particular. Below some pictures: 

Voyager signifie découvrir la region où on se trouve, par consequent des petits voyages journaliers. Crystal Springs, Silver Springs, Rainbow Springs, Manatee Springs, Homossassa Springs,(22c) donc naturellement nous sommes attirés, comme tous les touristes, par ces eaux claires et limpides des alentours de Ocala. Alors hier nous sommes allés a bord d'un petit bateau dans les marécages à l'ouest de notre region proche du golf du Mexique en compagnie d'autres touristes dans un parc qui abrite des animaux natifs de la Floride. Nombreux oiseaux  sont des rescapés.

Watercolor at the Springs

Among the incredible RVs around us, is this tiny vintage trailer. Notice a hole cut for an air conditioner, not that we need one at this time. In fact, the weather is perfect, at least for me. Blue sky, cool morning and evening but perfect daily temperature. San Diego days! 

So what do we do all day? At this time we are on a vacation mode: slow morning, work out daily, lots of walking. Lucky to have found a campground adjacent to a state park=trails. We share information on camping, points of interest, and  comments on retirement with other couples who like us have chosen to leave home base and go on the road.

Found a quiet spot to read but also to do yoga and pilate.

One can set up camp in an RV campground near Ocala, center Florida. First day trip can be visiting family and friends such as Jeff and Deb who are true round the year campers. Then one can spend time in Blue Springs StatePpark, not far from the Atlantic Ocean where one learns a bit about life in the 1800s. See below, the amazing colors of the perfectly clear and crystal  water where many fish have found refuge for the short cold spell. In the north they call these temperatures: Spring and around here, Winter. Ah ah!!
An attempt to create impressionist style photos below. The colors changed as the sun moved.  Or is it that the photographer did not know what she was doing? Nonetheless, these water and its reflections are beautiful!

And then there is the Human  Race right at the edge of Blue Springs, fishing, scuba diving and frolicking .

Destin FL, here we come!

We said bye bye to Nola and the kids with a heavy heart but looking forward to our next leg of our trip. Heard so much about Destin, could not wait to stay there for our 5 day reservation. Selected by chance, 6 months ago we picked Henderson State park. The reviews did not lie: a gorgeous site, isolated and clean surrounded by bushes.  Amazing white sand soft under our feet made us forget the brutal cold NW wind. However, lucky to have a well protected camp site.  With only a few steps from the bath house, we did not miss too much the fact that we did not have a complete hook up. Nights were completely dark and quiet, woken up by the birds but kept awake all day by the thunderous navy airplane maneuvers of: helicopters such as Black Hawks, Chinooks, Multi Functional Osprey, F15-15, F16 and F18. Information provided by my hubby, expert on that matter.  A dream for him, a bit noisy for me but I have to admit interesting enough for a 5 day stay. 

Our week took us through the state park dunes to the beach for a quick picnic (bit too windy to really enjoy it), long daily walks on the immaculate white sugar looking sand, to a small crowd surrounding  a fisherman pulling a huge Black Drum out of the waves, (that fish was bigger than the biggest fish we ever caught in Maine), a very educative visit to the Naval War Museum where we spent many hours and  finally a last stroll along charter boats secured on the town peer. (cf pictures below)

Nous avons dit au revoir à la Nouvelle Orleans et aux enfants le coeur gros mais anxieux de continuer notre aventure. Apres avoir reservé 5 jours à Destin, nous avons appris que c'était une excellente destination. Choisie par chance il y a 6 mois, notre reservation était au Camping Henderson (un parc d'état). Les commentaires sur internet n'ont pas menti: un site très beau, isolé et propre entouré de buissons. Un sable blanc et doux sous nos pieds nous fait oublier le froid glacial (pour la region) du nord-ouest. Heureusement nous sommes protégés sur notre terrain de camping. Seulement quelques pas pour aller aux bains, donc pas loin ce qui nous fait oublier (un tantinet) le fait que nous n'avons pas le tout a l'égout. Les nuits sont très sombres et calmes, reveilles par les oiseaux mais attention au tintamarre des avions de la navy en manœuvre toute la journée : des hélicoptères tels que les Black Hawks, Chinooks, Multi Functional Osprey, F15-15, F16 et F18. Informations données par mon mari, expert en la matière. Un rêve de voir tous ces avions, un peu bruyant pour moi mais je dois admettre intéressant pour un séjour de 5 jours.

Occupation de la semaine: nous avons suivi le passage au-dessus des dunes jusqu'a la plage pour un pique nique (mais trop de vent pour vraiment apprécier le moment a fond), de longues promenades sur le sable immaculé et nous nous sommes approchés d'un pêcheur au moment où il sortait un énorme poisson des vagues (poisson plus gros que tous ceux que nous avons pris au Maine), une visite très interessante du Musee naval de la Guerre où nous avons passé un excellente après midi et finalement une ballade dans un petit port de bateaux de pécheurs pour touristes mais pittoresque .
