The temperatures were still pretty low so we worried a bit
about camping but we set up camp that third night and all was find. The camping
we do is really not camping with all the amenities we drag behind the truck:
air conditioning, heating system, bathroom, stove, microwave, refrigerator…. It
is only a question of downsizing but even with its smallness, Tim does not have
to duck his head any where. Yeah! (It is better to be short, never have to
worry about such a thing).
Arriving now to our side trip to Charleston, SC. 90mn from
our RV, Charleston is a beautiful old city, East of the state along the
Atlantic Ocean. Historical town, well preserved and friendly to her tourists
(notice the feminine possessive adjective here). This city is very elegant, not
too fancy and extravagant (a few Gucci, Louis Vuitton but who does not like
this touch). Walking through her cobble stones streets along the pastel colored
facades of its refurbished town houses makes a pleasant touristic experience.
We started the day with a ferry ride to Sumter Island, where the first bullet of the American civil war was shot. Well bundled with our ski attire, we were able to enjoy an historical tour of the fort placed in the middle of the bay. Sent a picture of a brand new Coast Guard vessel patrolling the waters to Judson, and learned a bit of history before going to the city itself. We had done our homework the night before: “google, can you tell us what we can expect to see and visit in Charleston?” along with a phone call to Rob and Cindy who had spent a week there. Took notes, looked over the map and set up our GPS.
We were well prepared for our day. I just love what camping offers to us: freedom to come and go every where the wind takes us (and boy did we have the winds with us yesterday!). Oh and when in Rome, do like the Romans do. Not sure I can copy their drawl accent (I have my own to worry about) but at least try their food. A dish of shrimp and grits ladled with brown gravy and biscuits found its way on my side of the table for lunch. Not very hungry that night. Had plenty at lunch. My opinion: very good meal. I still have not found the courage to try Okra…

Today: yoga, bike ride, blog and….well not sure what is
next. That is the luxury of retirement life…

Murrells Inlet (10mn from our campground) has a Marshwalk where we spent an afternoon listening to Country music and walked around the board walk. Below are some pictures. Weather was great that day.
